Building Smarter Classrooms: Using AI the Right Way
Nov 27, 2024

We built Edvisor around three core principles:
AI should enhance learning, not just provide answers.
Students need immediate, personalized feedback.
Students must learn how to use AI effectively.
Though these principles sound obvious, we spent months conducting research, sifting through flawed studies, debunking myths, and navigating mountains of misinformation. Three insights stood out and shaped how we built Edvisor.ai, each providing key points that reinforced our principles and guided our approach.
The Right and Wrong way to Use AI in the Classroom
We’ve spoken with dozens of instructors who proudly encourage their students to use ChatGPT for the same assignments they’ve been assigning for years. While this approach provides students with experience using AI, research shows that relying on AI for answers significantly decreases learning. In other words, students may learn how to use AI, but they miss out on mastering the subjects being taught in class.
A study published in Smart Learning Environments found that students who relied on AI for answer retrieval scored, on average, 6.71 points lower than those who actively engaged with AI as a learning tool.
Alternatively, using AI as a learning tool has proven to dramatically improve learning. For example, AI-powered simulations let students practice real-world scenarios like solving case studies or role-playing critical thinking tasks. AI can also personalize learning paths based on a student’s mastery, focusing on areas that need improvement. Most importantly, AI serves as an exceptional tutor—guiding students through challenges, simplifying complex topics, and delivering instant, personalized feedback.
Immediate Feedback Dramatically Improves Learning Outcomes
One of the largest challenges in education is giving timely feedback to students. In many classrooms, feedback is delayed for days, or even weeks, leaving students to move on to new material without knowing whether they’ve understood the previous concepts. In some cases, students are lucky to get feedback within a week, let alone immediately. This delay often results in repeated mistakes and missed opportunities for learning.
Research published in The Journal of Educational Psychology found that students who received immediate feedback improved their performance by 25% compared to those who experienced delays of a week or more. Immediate feedback helps students correct errors on the spot and reinforces their understanding while the material is still fresh. This not only boosts retention but also keeps students engaged and builds their confidence as learners.
AI Literacy is a Must-Have Skill for Fresh Grads
The job market is shifting as AI makes entire roles redundant. In this landscape, AI literacy is one of the most sought-after skills for graduates. A study by the Cengage Group found that 76% of employers prioritize AI literacy, reflecting its critical role in industries like healthcare, finance, and education.
Using AI in the classroom ensures students graduate with skills they can immediately apply in the workforce, making them better equipped to succeed in an AI-driven world.
